Professor of economics at the Sapienza University of Rome (Italy)and a visiting professor at the College of Europe in Bruges (Belgium) and the University of San Diego, Business School, California (USA).

In 2013 he was elected Senator for the Italian Democratic Party.

Member of the Scientific Council of Treccani Encyclopedia; the "Think Tank 20" the Brookings Institution in Washington; CER (European Research Centre), Rome, Italy.

He has served as an advisor to several international institutions and organizations, including the World Bank, the European Commission, the OECD, ECLAC.

He was a Visiting Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, ULB (Belgium), Natolin College (Warzawa, Poland), Complutense (Madrid, Spain).

Author of 18 books, monographs and anthologies and more than 100 articles and book chapters in the areas of international economics, European economic integration, economic regionalism.
