Innovation in Banking and Digital Finance - Prof. N. Forti

The course is appropriate for students interested in Banking, wishing to learn how Fintech is reconfiguring Banking and financial Business models.

Innovation and Digital transformation are playing an important role in the evolution of Banks and Financial sector.

The course is aimed to present how the Banking industry is structured and how it is changing - due to the impact of financial technologies and the pressure of new competitors - in the four main business areas: Corporate banking, Retail banking, Asset management and Payments systems.

The course aims to present the innovations in the Banking and Financial industry and to highlight the features of new players compared to traditional ones. The approach will be strongly focused on the best practices from major groups and new players and startup companies.

Every class will benefit from several presentations of key experiences and case studies presented by Bank top managers, Fintech experts, Researchers and Strategic consultants, directly involved in the most impacted business areas.

Students will understand the changes in the Banking Business Models and the implications of Fintech for the future of banks.

The main topics will be:

  • Banking context and evolution: Banks’ strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats; Performance, profitability and costs; Covid-19 impacts; Regulation and supervision; FinTech and Big Tech competition; Business models and strategies
  • Innovation in Corporate banking: Lending and new technology, Challenger banks and Smes financing, Trade finance and Fintech firms; Corporate equity, IPOs, ICOs
  • New trends in Retail banking: Digital transformation and Customers’ experience, Deposits and Banks’ funding, Digital banks, Consumer or P2P lending, Real Estate financing
  • Asset Management and Insurance: Financial savings and customer needs, Asset allocation, Trading online, Artificial Intelligence, Robo-advisory, Protection and InsurTech trends
  • The future of Payment systems: Digital payments, customers’ liquidity needs; globalization, security and regulation; Cryptocurrencies and Central bank digital currencies

At the end of the course, students will be able to critically evaluate the opportunities related to the development of new innovative strategies in the Banking and Financial sector.

Students will be able to examine the Business model of new players and highlight the strengths and weaknesses of new business initiatives in the banking-financial sector.

FINAL TEST AND FREQUENCY

In order to obtain the 3 CFU credits for the extra activities, the students are required to prepare a submit a final report (15,000-20,000 characters excluding tables, plots and reference list) on a topic identified jointly with the instructor and related to one of the seminars.

Only students attending at least 80% of the scheduled lessons will be allowed to submit the final work in order to obtain the 3 CFUs valid for the Extra-Activities. The deadline for the submission of the final report is June 10th, 2021.
