Professor Joong Son presents this new course with the main purpose of providing a faithful depiction of the Supply Chain Risk Management.

The course is open to all Business Administration students with a preferred lane for students belonging to the Supply Chain Management specialization and for those who are, among all specializations, in the 2nd year enrollment.

1. Drivers underlying the global supply chain management and practices (3 hours)

- study the historical evolution, trends, and challenges ahead for the global supply chain.

- discuss complexities and interdependencies in contemporary global supply chain.

- indentify and reflect on business practices that have contributed to increases in disruptive events in the global supply network.

2. Source of supply chain risks (3 hours)

- understand the definition of risk, supply chain risk, and supply chain risk management.

- study results of industry surveys to understand businesses awareness vs preparedness with regards to supply chain risks.

- discuss sources of supply chain risk (i.e., demand, supply, process, control, and environmental) and implications (strategic and operational) of each source.

3. Recurrent risks, disruptive risks, and mitigating strategies (6 hours)

- investigate the causes and impact of recurrent risks and disruptive risks.

- discuss the dynamics among information transparency, incentives, and supply chain integration - Beer distribution game (board version).

- identify different mitigating strategies to minimize supply chain disruptions.

- reflect on challenges in business continuity in light of the current state of global supply chain.

4. Logistics structures: centralization vs. decentralization (6 hours)

- compare different logistics structures (centralized vs. decentralized).

- discuss the relationship between logistics structures and design (e.g., demand pattern and number of markets to supply).

- conduct simulation experiments (spreadsheet modeling) to examine the effectiveness of different logistics structures.

- identify the right balance in logistics structure and design for businesses with respect to risk pooling and risk diversification in the global supply chain.

5. Disaster and humanitarian supply chain (3 hours)

- understand main differences between commercial supply chains (CSC) and humanitarian supply chains (HSC).

- discuss major issues facing the current state of global disaster and humanitarian supply chain.

- discuss future challenges in humanitarian supply chain: post-disaster humanitarian logistics.

6. Building supply chain resilience (3 hours)

- study the characteristics of a resilient supply chain.

- discuss how risk can be shared and compensated to build a resilient supply chain. That is, compare benefits and costs of building a resilient supply chain.

- discuss disruptive factors in the global supply chain in the next ten years.

3 CFU: Exam and Frequency

The course is worth 3 CFU credit points and starts on February 21st

To obtain the 3 CFU credits for the extra activities, students will be required to attend at least 5 over 6 modules and to participate to a group-project work whose guidelines will be provided during the first or second meeting.

The course value added

The course aims to provide students with the skills which are required in order to acquire knowledge related to Supply Chain Risk Management.

The Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM) is a very relevant topic with practical implications, as well as rich up in up-to-date contents and characterized by several implications and ties with the Supply Chain Management.

These are sub-themes such as:

- Global SC practices/trends;

- Source of Supply Chain Risk;

- Supply Disruptions & Mitigating Strategies;

- Logistics Structures (centralization vs. decentralization);

- Humanitarian Supply Chain & Disaster Logistics;

- and Building Supply Chain Resilience.


The most important challenges in managing the risk of a Supply Chain are:

- to introduce changes and improvements in an integrated and consistent approach with the company objectives;

- to achieve a competitive advantage in the industry, characterized by a low chance of being eroded and a strong resilience whenever endogenous or exogenous elements could erode it.


The fundamental learning objectives of SCRM course are:

- study the drivers that underline the Global Supply Chain Management and the business practices;

- study the causes and consequences of risk in the Supply Chain;

- investigating the causes of recurrent and disruptive risk, identifying different mitigating strategies to minimize supply chain disruptions;

- study logistics structures: centralization vs. decentralization;

- knowing the catastrophes and humanitarian disasters that can intervene in the Supply Chain;

- describe the characteristics of a resilient supply chain and the implementation strategies of a supply chain that is resilient.
