Regolamento esame

Exam

  • Written and (short) oral exam on the whole program (i.e., all syllabus topics covered by the compulsory readings).
  • Minimum qualifying grade required to get credits: 18/30.
  • Exam length: 1 hour and 15 minutes. The exam will start at 9:00.
  • Grades: grades will be communicated in Teams by appointment (in the afternoon of the very same day of the exam or on one of the following working days); on that occasion, there will be a short oral exam that will consist of a brief discussion of the written exam (if needed). As a result of the oral exam, the grade of the written exam could be confirmed (as it usually is) or reduced up to 5 points (there's no way of improving your grade on the oral exam). If you do not show up on the due date in Teams, your grade will NOT be registered on the DELPHI system. In other words, without the oral exam and any formal acceptance of the final grade on your part, the grade will not be recorded (in the entry of your exam result on the DELPHI system, you will read "ritirato" withdrawn), and you will have to retake the exam.

Grading policy and assessment method

Grading is based on the Italian Grading System ranges from 18/30 to 30/30. Specifically, the highest mark is 30/30 with distinction (defined as “lode” in Italian), while the lower is 18/30. Exams under 18/30 are considered as “not passed”. The following chart compares the Italian academic grading system with the ECTS grading framework.

Italian grade

Definition

30 e lode

full mark with honors

29-30

excellent

28-27

very good

26-24

good

23-18

satisfactory

< 18

failed

Please note that a grade of 30/30 represents achievement that is outstanding relative to the level necessary to meet course requirements (students must show an excellent knowledge of the subject, all written work must be well written, competent, and accurate; sloppiness of any kind will prevent students from getting 30/30 as final grade, no matter if students feel they are well prepared). Bargaining on grading is not allowed. Notice that grading is based on performance rather than effort. If you are not happy with the grade, improve your performance. It is not possible to submit extra work in an attempt to improve a grade.

The exam evaluates the overall preparation of the student, the ability to integrate the knowledge of the different parts of the program, the consequentiality of the reasoning, the analytical capacity, and the autonomy of judgment. In addition, the property of language and clarity of presentation, in accordance with the general and the specific learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding; ability to apply knowledge and understanding; autonomy of judgment; learning skills; communication skills). See here.

General exam rules

  • In the Winter session, students can take the written exam twice. In December, there will be a first exam call covering the whole program. Students who fail in the first exam call, and students who pass it but are not satisfied with their grades, can retake the exam in the second exam call of the Winter session.
  • Take-home exams are not allowed.
  • Students must take the exam during a regular exam session. Ad personam exceptions are not possible.
  • Grades cannot be "frozen" by postponing the oral exam and/or registration to a future exam date.
  • In the case of failure, the failing grade will not be registered and on the DELPHI system, you will read "ritirato" withdrawn.
