Reading Group: Philosophy of Economics
room A - at 2.00 pm
Friday, June 13, 2025 h. 14:00-16:00
room A (1st floor, Bldg B)
This meeting focused on power as modeled by M. Piccione and A. Rubinstein in their EJ 2007 paper, "Equilibrium in the Jungle". The paper suggests that economics routinely but often only implicitly deals with power (for instance, the power conferred by initial endowments in the Arrow-Debreu model).
Power, in its many possible declinations, is instead a central theme in political science and philosophy. In the following meeting we will then provide a very short introduction to power as conceptualised by some key contemporaneous thinkers, from Robert Dahl to Michel Foucault, based on Steven Lukes Power 3rd edition, Bloomsbury Publishing, 2021.
The issue of power is of interest to us in itself, but also as a vantage point from which to look at some key differences in method and content between economics and other social disciplines.
