Knowledge and Understanding and Ability to Apply Knowledge and understanding: Detail

GENERAL AREA

Knowledge and understanding

The focus of the outgoing curriculum of students in the Master's Degree Program is a deep education in economics to which business, law and statistics are added. The Master's Degree emphasizes the use of case study tools to make the transmission of knowledge, particularly regulatory and institutional knowledge, more agile. The program complements and deepens the skills that students acquired during their bachelor's degree, focusing, however, on the aspects of knowledge specifically pertaining to the European Union. Such knowledge and skills provide the necessary foundation for professional placement in institutional settings, for personal growth, and for further study in research choices such as the doctoral program. The testing of knowledge and understanding is done through intermediate tests in addition to the examination and final test, all in English.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding

The Master's Degree is designed in keeping with what is the evolving professional demand expressed by the international labor market. The rapid internationalization of the business environment results in a growing demand for individuals who possess advanced preparation from management, legal and strategic perspectives. During the academic journey, which often includes internship opportunities, overseas mobility or other practice-level educational experiences, students refine their command of the English language that enables them to live and work successfully in an international context. The knowledge acquired in the fields of law and economics-statistics provide the necessary foundation for professional placement in institutional or corporate settings, for personal growth, and for further study in research choices such as doctoral studies. Students' ability to apply their knowledge is continually assessed through the preparation of specific projects within each teaching, analysis of case studies, active participation in lectures, and proficiency examinations.

LEGAL AREA

Knowledge and understanding

The teachings of the legal area are intended to provide students of the Master's Degree Course with specialized training not only of a theoretical nature, but also of a practical nature on the institutional framework, as well as on the administrative and commercial law of the European Union, with particular reference to issues in competition and regulation as well as the relationship with economic phenomena. The characterizing and related courses in the legal area, in particular, focus on international commercial and administrative law according to an interdisciplinary approach, which aims to investigate the relationship between law and economics, and addresses the institutional profiles of the legal system of the European Union.

The main object of study is the law of the European Union and its policies. The courses aim to develop dynamic knowledge of the main phenomena related to them, providing the necessary tools and fundamental analytical models for understanding the system of European Union law and for evaluating the role of private citizens and businesses. In order to make the transmission of knowledge, particularly normative and institutional knowledge, more agile, while ensuring its critical characterization, the teaching method is based on the use of case studies, simulations, as well as discussion of materials and classroom debates.

At the end of each of the area courses, therefore, students not only acquire knowledge about the main European policies, structure and functioning of the European administration and decision-making process, which complements and/or reinforces that acquired during the Bachelor's degree, but they must also demonstrate ability to locate sources, as well as to identify and distinguish problems. Such knowledge and skills enable the EEBL graduate to develop and apply original ideas, including in a research context, as well as in interaction with specialist and non-specialist interlocutors, providing the tools and keys for professional placement in institutional and non-institutional settings, as well as for research.

Testing of knowledge and comprehension skills is done through intermediate tests in addition to the examination and final test, all in English.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding

The objective of legal area courses is to prepare students to solve new and emerging problems, in the European and international arena, in complex situations, with particular reference to problems related to the institutional framework and economic activities, by exploiting the ability to understand the tools, institutions and principles of the national and European legal system.

These skills are extensively developed in the legal area courses, thanks to the teaching method that requires the active participation of students in the analysis and discussion of cases and materials.

ECONOMIC-STATISTICS-BUSINESS AREA

Knowledge and understanding

II Program of courses related to the economics area includes a considerable variety of sources and documents (such as, e.g., databases, working papers, articles in international scholarly journals, links to other resources available online, etc.), as well as tools for analysis and practical applications, including with the help of statistical and mathematical software, with the aim of providing students with the necessary educational framework for understanding and interpreting the dynamics of major economic phenomena and for developing the critical skills necessary to follow and intervene in the latest empirical and theoretical debates in the various subjects of interest in the area.

The objective of the Program is to provide students with the main theoretical notions and empirical knowledge that form the activity of the various professional figures working in the area, as well as the ability to use the tools to analyze processes and understand the functioning of political and economic institutions, and thus be able to strengthen and extend the knowledge gained in the Program of the first cycle and enable them to develop and / or apply original ideas, including in a research context.

At the end of the course, master's degree graduates will in particular have advanced theoretical and methodological knowledge on:

(i) the phenomena and dynamics affecting the process of European integration, such as monetary integration, fiscal stability rules, cohesion policies, the economic implications of the main constituent treaties of the European Union, the operation of EU policies, the implications for monetary policy, and the implications of the process of European integration on economic growth;

(ii) the principles underlying the organization of the state, principles of taxation and the provision of private goods such as health and education, political processes and institutions from a rational choice perspective, with particular applications to the European Union;

(iii) international economics topics related to money and real markets;

(iv) formal analysis of strategic interaction contexts, applications to industrial organization theory, and regulatory theory;

(v) the dynamics of financial asset prices and financial crises, portfolio management and debate related to the reform of rules necessary to prevent financial crises, notions and knowledge forming for the work of professional manager, financial analyst in enterprises and forming the work in national and international financial regulatory institutions;

(vii) the basic elements for studying the economics of the environment and analyzing the interdependencies between the economic system and the natural environment, and the main economic policy instruments for appropriate use of natural resources;

(viii) the main governance and management issues faced by businesses and other complex organizations today, with a focus on understanding strategic corporate behavior, with the underlying contextualization of related aspects such as: innovation management; growth paths; internationalization processes; and updated reflections on “behaviorist” strategies.

Courses related to the area of Statistics and Econometrics will also enable the student to develop the ability to use acquired theoretical knowledge with data analysis techniques applied to practical cases and microdata analysis useful for the preparation of research projects. The main statistical methodologies of “data mining” and data-driven statistical learning will then be explored.

The basis for solving macroeconomic models useful for understanding the effects that fiscal and monetary policy decisions have on key macroeconomic variables will also be provided; to be able to manage information complexity by distilling relevant information from a large amount of data; to be able to predict economic and business phenomena; to acquire the ability to select a predictive rule from those available, including through the use of dedicated software in laboratory sessions; to be able to communicate the main empirical evidence emerging from the analysis; to critically appreciate the potential and limitations of available methodologies, acquiring the ability to discriminate among them.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding

Master's graduates at the end of the course will have developed the ability to understand clearly and organically social, economic and political phenomena in general, and in particular those affecting European integration, and to apply the knowledge acquired to the analysis and interpretation of these phenomena, as well as to use what they have learned in new areas and in a work context.

The multidisciplinary approach and teaching methodologies of the Program, characterized by a strong interactivity with students, are structured with this goal in mind. In fact, teaching activities are carried out by the professor, ensuring a strong participation on the part of the students, who are given materials and readings in advance. Students are required to actively participate in each class discussion, through the analysis of case studies and materials previously selected and presented in the syllabus, but also through the research of relevant materials in libraries and online. They will also be involved in the use of analysis techniques on data and applications to practical cases with laboratory sessions and the use of dedicated classrooms with PC stations. Thus, practical exercises and workshops with presentation of the results of projects assigned to students will also be planned. Many lectures also focus on problem-solving to hone  the students' ability to draw relevant conclusions and arrive at an understanding of economic phenomena from practical problems and issues.

Of considerable importance to developing the ability to apply acquired knowledge and understanding skills are the opportunities provided for students to undertake internships at other institutions and choose specific seminars and electives.
