The Great Gender Divergence
A talk by Alice Evans
On October 16th 2024 we had the pleasure of hosting a fantastic event that was met with an overwhelming response. The room was packed, filled to the brim with attendees, thanks to the energy and professionalism of Professor Alice Evans.
The seminar centered around her book, published by Princeton University Press, and was aimed at EEBL students. In the book, Professor Evans explores the causes of Europe's "early equality," the progress made by East Asia and Latin America, the lag in gender equality in regions such as the Middle East, South Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa, and why Southeast Asia has consistently been at the forefront of gender equality.
As a Professor of International Development at King’s College London and a faculty associate at Harvard’s Center for International Development, Professor Evans is highly regarded for her research. She has published in leading journals such as World Development, Socio-Economic Review, and Gender & Society. Her insights and expertise, also showcased in her podcast Rocking Our Priors, where she discusses issues of growth, governance, and gender, made this event particularly insightful and engaging for all those who attended.
