Obiettivi Formativi
OBIETTIVI FORMATIVI:
Learning Objectives
EDUCATIONAL GOALS:
The aim of the corse is to train students able to understand and use the main basic tools of descriptive and inferential statistics in order to process, analyze and interpret economic and/or social data. To this end, the course deals with the basic elements of descriptive statistics, probability calculation and statistical inference (point estimate, confidence intervals, maximum likelihood, least squares, hypothesis testing and linear regression model), so as to allow students to acquire the ability to analyze social and economic phenomena through the correct application of basic statistical methods.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
Through the study of statistical methodologies and the practical application of case studies, the student acquires the ability to analyze statistical data, choosing the most appropriate approach for the various cognitive purposes. In particular, the student must know and
know how to apply the main measures of descriptive statistics in relation to qualitative and/or quantitative data, know and understand the difference between a descriptive analysis limited to the specific sample and an inferential analysis which wishes to draw more general conclusions, know how to carry out a statistical test and draw conclusions from it conclusions, know how to apply a linear regression model.
MAKING JUDGMENTS
Through the development of a term paper, the student must demonstrate that he is able to handle statistical data, conduct simple analyzes and describe the results obtained.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
The ability to analyze statistical data and present the results obtained in written form is assessed through the development of a term paper, which affects the final grade, written using an appropriate technical language.
CAPACITY TO LEARN:
Students are continuously involved, during the lessons, in discussions on concrete cases related to statistical analyzes of real economic data.

Programma
Program
The course (54 hours) is structured into 3 main topics: descriptive statistics; probability theory; statistical inference.
In the first part of descriptive statistics, lasting a total of 20 hours, students will learn the basic concepts and statistical terminology (4 hours); they will learn to summarise the phenomena under study and examine their variability and concentration (8 hours); they will analyse the relationships between two qualitative and two quantitative characters and learn the main indices for measuring their dependence (8 hours).
With the Calculus of Probability lasting 10 hours, the student will learn the main definitions of probability, study the main theorems of the Calculus of Probability and Bayes' theorem.
Finally, with statistical inference (14 hours), the student will be able to use sampling procedures to estimate the unknown parameters of a population and test them using statistical tests. The final topic of the course will be linear regression whereby the student will learn to examine the relationship between two variables with a probabilistic model.
During the course, exercises (two hours per week of the scheduled hours for each part) will be carried out to test the students' learning of the topics covered.
