Program
The course (54 hours) is structured into 3 main topics: descriptive statistics; probability theory; statistical inference.
In the first part of descriptive statistics, lasting a total of 20 hours, students will learn the
basic concepts and statistical terminology (4 hours); they will learn to summarise the
phenomena under study and examine their variability and concentration (8 hours); they will analyse the relationships between two qualitative and two quantitative characters and learn the main indices for measuring their dependence (8 hours).
With the Calculus of Probability lasting 16 hours, the student will learn the main definitions of probability, study the main theorems of the Calculus of Probability and Bayes' theorem.
Finally, with statistical inference (18 hours), the student will be able to use sampling
procedures to estimate the unknown parameters of a population and test them using
statistical tests. The final topic of the course will be linear regression whereby the student will learn to examine the relationship between two variables with a probabilistic model.
During the course, exercises (two hours per week of the scheduled hours for each part) will be carried out to test the students' learning of the topics covered.

Teaching methods
Teaching, consistent with the course's learning objectives, follows a theoretical-practical approach that combines lectures with practical exercises. Specifically, lectures cover the theoretical and methodological foundations outlined in the course syllabus, while practical exercises focus on applying these methodologies to real-world cases. Students are encouraged to actively participate in class, collaborating on the analysis and solution of examples and exercises during the lectures.
Regolamento Esame
- insufficiente lo studente che non ha acquisito la terminologia statistica e dimostra gravi lacune nella conoscenza dei concetti di base di ciascuna delle tre parti del coso;
- sufficiente con una valutazione tra 18/30 e 20/30 lo studente che non ha trattato con adeguato approfondimento gli argomenti del corso, ma che ha conoscenza dei concetti di base di ciascuna delle tre parti del corso;
- sufficiente con una valutazione tra 21/30 e 23/30 lo studente che ha conoscenza dei concetti di base del corso, ma che non è in grado di rispondere con precisione e chiarezza alle domande formulate dal docente;
- sufficiente con una valutazione tra 24/30 e 26/30 lo studente che dimostra di aver appreso in profondità gli argomenti del corso ma che non è in grado di effettuare i collegamenti tra gli stessi come richiesto dal docente;
- sufficiente con una valutazione tra 27/30 e 29/30 lo studente che ha studiato in profondità la materia, ma che dimostra alcune lacune rispetto ai temi di maggiore complessità del corso;
Exam Rules
The exam consists of a written test. and an oral exam. The teacher will verify with the result
of the written test the knowledge of the student of the main topics.
The written exam will contain approximately ten exercises similar to those covered in class, designed to test knowledge of descriptive statistical techniques (10 points), basic probability theory techniques (10 points), and inference techniques (10 points). Furthermore, the written exam will test the student's ability to identify the correct problem-solving procedure and understand the underlying logic.
The written exam will also contain a series of questions designed to test the student's theoretical knowledge; these questions will include both open-ended and multiple-choice theoretical questions.
After the break between the two semester modules, a midterm exam will be held, graded out of 30. If the midterm exam is passed (higher than 16/30), only the second part of the program may be taken during the winter session. The final grade will be calculated as a weighted average of the midterm exam and the second part exam.
If the midterm exam is not passed, the student may still take the entire exam, starting with the December exam session.
A failed written exam in December does not preclude the possibility of retaking the exam in January.
A severely insufficient written exam (less than 10/30) in the January exam session will result in the inability to take the February exam. The same criteria applies for the summer session: a grade lower than 10/30 in the first exam session will prevent access to the second exam session of the same session.
The marks for the written test is awarded by means of a mark expressed in thirtieths.
In the final assessment, the teacher will take into account the result of the written test and will judge:
nsufficient the student who has not acquired the statistical terminology and shows serious gaps in the knowledge of the basic concepts of each of the three parts;
sufficient with a grade between 18/30 and 20/30 the student who has not dealt with adequate depth of the course topics, but has knowledge of the basic concepts of each of the three parts of the course;.
sufficient with a mark of between 21/30 and 23/30 the student who has knowledge of the
basic concepts of the course, but is unable to answer accurately and clearly the questions formulated by the teacher;
sufficient with a mark between 24/30 and 26/30 the student demonstrates a thorough understanding of the course topics but is unable to make the connections between them as required by the teacher;
sufficient with a mark between 27/30 and 29/30 the student who has studied the subject in depth but shows some gaps with respect to the more complex topics of the course;
sufficient with a mark of between 30/30 and 30/30 with distinction the student who demonstrates mastery of the topics covered, even the most complex ones, expounds them with clarity and precision and knows how to make the right connections between the various topics requested by the teacher.
