Obiettivi Formativi
OBIETTIVI FORMATIVI:
Learning Objectives
EDUCATIONAL GOALS:
The aim of the corse is to train students able to understand and use the main basic tools of descriptive and inferential statistics in order to process, analyze and interpret economic and/or social data. To this end, the course deals with the basic elements of descriptive statistics, probability calculation and statistical inference (point estimate, confidence intervals, maximum likelihood, least squares, hypothesis testing and linear regression model), so as to allow students to acquire the ability to analyze social and economic phenomena through the correct application of basic statistical methods.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
Through the study of statistical methodologies and the practical application of case studies, the student acquires the ability to analyze statistical data, choosing the most appropriate approach for the various cognitive purposes. In particular, the student must know and
know how to apply the main measures of descriptive statistics in relation to qualitative and/or quantitative data, know and understand the difference between a descriptive analysis limited to the specific sample and an inferential analysis which wishes to draw more general conclusions, know how to carry out a statistical test and draw conclusions from it conclusions, know how to apply a linear regression model.
MAKING JUDGMENTS
Through the development of a term paper, the student must demonstrate that he is able to handle statistical data, conduct simple analyzes and describe the results obtained.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
The ability to analyze statistical data and present the results obtained in written form is assessed through the development of a term paper, which affects the final grade, written using an appropriate technical language.
CAPACITY TO LEARN:
Students are continuously involved, during the lessons, in discussions on concrete cases related to statistical analyzes of real economic data.

Teaching methods
The teacher will discuss with the students the topics of the course at the blackboard, trying to involve the students and asking them to submit questions to the teacher.
Regolamento Esame
inferiore a 18 (insufficiente): gravi lacune e mancata conoscenza della terminologia di base;
da 18 a 20: conoscenza solo superficiale dei concetti base;
da 21 a 23: conoscenza base, ma risposte poco precise o poco chiare;
da 24 a 26: buona preparazione approfondita, ma con difficoltà nel collegare i vari argomenti;
da 27 a 29: ottima preparazione, con piccole incertezze solo sui temi più complessi;
Exam Rules
The exam consists of a written test, graded out of thirty.
The written exam contains approximately ten exercises similar to those covered in class, designed to test knowledge of descriptive statistical techniques (10 points), basic probability theory techniques (10 points) and inference techniques (10 points). It also assesses the student’s ability to identify the correct problem-solving procedure and to understand the underlying logic.
The written exam further contains a series of questions designed to test the student’s theoretical knowledge; these include both open-ended and multiple-choice questions.
Midterm exam: after the break between the two semester modules, a midterm exam is held, graded out of thirty. If the midterm exam is passed (higher than 16/30), only the second part of the programme may be taken during the winter session; the final grade is calculated as a weighted average of the midterm exam and the second-part exam. If the midterm exam is not passed, the student may still take the entire exam, starting with the December exam session. A failed written exam in December does not preclude the possibility of retaking the exam in January.
Severe fail rule (lower than 10/30): a severely insufficient written exam (lower than 10/30) in the January exam session results in the inability to take the February exam. The same criterion applies to the summer session: a grade lower than 10/30 in the first exam session prevents access to the second exam session of the same session.
Assessment criteria:
lower than 18 (fail): the student has not acquired statistical terminology and shows serious gaps in the knowledge of the basic concepts of each of the three parts of the course;
from 18 to 20: the student has not covered the course topics in adequate depth, but knows the basic concepts of each of the three parts of the course;
from 21 to 23: the student knows the basic concepts of the course, but is unable to answer accurately and clearly the questions formulated by the teacher;
from 24 to 26: the student demonstrates a thorough understanding of the course topics, but is unable to make the connections between them as required by the teacher;
from 27 to 29: the student has studied the subject in depth, but shows some gaps with respect to the more complex topics of the course;
30/30 cum laude: the student demonstrates mastery of the topics covered, even the most complex ones, expounds them with clarity and precision and makes the right connections between the various topics requested by the teacher.
