"I got my Ph D from the University of California at Berkeley where my dissertation was written under the direction of Prof. G.P. Hochschild. I've held teaching positions at the University of Chicago and Columbia University before coming to the CUNY Graduate Center where I became Full Professor in 1975 and was Chair of the Mathematics Department there for six years. I've successfully directed 8 Ph.D students.
On various occasions I've visited: the Univ. of Cal. Berkeley, Paris VI, La Sapienza, Tor Vergata, Darmstadt and SUNY Stonybrook. I've been the recipient a number of National Science Foundation grants, a NATO Senior Post Doctoral Fellowship in Science, and been a Fellow at Centro Nazionale delle Ricerche.
My areas of specialization in mathematics are Lie groups and algebraic groups, Representation theory and harmonic analysis and homogeneous spaces of nite volume. I'm an editor of the Journal of Lie theory. I've written over 50 research papers and 5 books."
