“Globalisation is older than you might think, and many of the lessons to emerge from its earlier stages are still pertinent today. For example, most economists agree there will be gains if economies trade with each other, but what hard scientific evidence do we have on the size and causes of these gains? Not much. If we look at what happened during the wave of globalisation that occurred during the 19th century, however, we see the gains were significant and stemmed from the technological differences between countries. By relating this to the present day we can understand a little more about international trade and industrial organisation in the 21st century.”
