Ambassador Giampiero Massolo

Born in Warsaw (Poland) on October 5, 1954.In July 1976 he graduated in Political Science, specialising in International Politics, from the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali (LUISS), Rome. From November 1977 to May 1978 he worked at FIAT S.p.A., Turin, at the Economic and Social Relations Department, and subsequently at the Department for European and International Affairs.

On May 4, 1978 following entry by examination, he joined the Diplomatic Service. From 1980 to 1982 he served at the Italian Embassy to the Holy See, also in charge of the Cultural and Press Office. From 1982 to 1985, First Secretary for Economic and Commercial Affairs, at the Italian Embassy in Moscow. Between 1985 and 1988 he served as First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Italy to the European Community in Brussels, where he was the spokesman of the Italian Delegation on the EEC Council Working Groups for Environmental and Energy Policies. He also coordinated State aids and industrial policy issues. On August 4, 1988 he returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome where he served at the Office of the Secretary General.
From February 1990 he served at the Office of the Diplomatic Advisor to the Prime Minister, and was appointed Deputy Diplomatic Advisor to the Prime Minister on October 1993. On June 21, 1994 he was designated Principal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister and, following a Government change, his assignment was confirmed on January 18, 1995.
Since June 24, 1996 he served as Head of the Press and Information Office and the Minister’s spokesman at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On December 23, 1997 he was appointed Minister Plenipotentiary. Deputy Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while also heading the Press and Information Office,  December 15, 2000
On September 24, 2001 he was confirmed as Deputy Secretary-General Director General for Multilateral Political Affairs and Human Rights, March 8, 2004 Head of Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, November 20, 2004.
On January 2, 2006 he was appointed Ambassador.

On September 12, 2007 he was appointed Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From April 1, 2008 to December 31, 2009 (end of the Italian G8 Presidency) he served as Personal Representative of the Italian Prime Minister for the G8/G20 Summits (Sherpa)
On May 11, 2012 he was appointed Director General of the Department for Intelligence and Security (DIS).

He speaks English, French, Russian, Polish and some German.
