Ai fini della preparazione all'esame si forniscono le seguenti informazioni, anche sulla base delle domande formulate dagli studenti nelle ultime settimane:

- durante l'esame è indispensabile disporre delle tavole statistiche delle diverse distribuzioni di probabilità ed è possibile utilizzare copia del formulario inserito tra i materiali didattici;

- la tesina può essere predisposta da un singolo individuo o da un gruppo di studenti non superiore alle tre unità. Nella prima pagina della tesina vanno indicati i nomi e le matricole degli studenti che l'hanno preparata. Please note that in this assignment you are required to consult the Standard Ultimate Life Table, that is also available on the webpage of the course.

Using these tables is quite intuitive (they essentially provide the actuarial value of unit life insurance contracts), however, should you need any clarification, do not hesitate to contact me. 

I have also graded your first and second Assignments, so that you can better keep track of your progress. I'll bring the papers with me on Thursday.

L'esempio di tesina illustrata ieri dal Prof. Mazziotta è disponibile tra i materiali didattici. 

Ai fini dell'esame, gli studenti devono predisporre una tesina secondo le indicazioni di seguito riportate (e contenute nella prima pagina dell'esempio):

Il Think Tank “Research and Territory” ti dà il benvenuto nel suo Team di Statistical Analysis. Recentemente il Think Tank ha ricevuto l’incarico di analizzare nel tempo alcuni indicatori di benessere del nostro Paese. Sei incaricato, servendoti della banca dati del Benessere Equo e Sostenibile (BES) dell’Istat, di selezionare un dominio; all’interno del dominio, devi analizzare tre indicatori per te importanti per rappresentare il benessere
(gli indicatori devono avere la stessa disponibilità di dati in serie storica per 10 anni).

Si chiede di procedere alle seguenti analisi:
1. costruire una tabella che raccolga tutti i dati degli indicatori selezionati per l’Italia e per i 10 anni considerati, con le relative variazioni percentuali;
2. costruire un grafico con i tre indicatori che mostri gli andamenti nel tempo dei fenomeni;
3. commentare l’evoluzione nel corso del tempo dei fenomeni considerati, anche alla luce di quanto indicato dall’Istat nella pubblicazione sul BES;
4. calcolare alcune statistiche descrittive degli indicatori (media aritmetica, mediana e scarto quadratico medio);
5. confrontare la variabilità degli indicatori utilizzando una misura relativa (espressa in percentuale);
6. costruire la matrice delle correlazioni, evidenziando, se presenti, casi di correlazione spuria;
7. fornire, considerando le analisi dei punti da 4 a 6, un breve commento dei risultati ottenuti.

L’elaborato deve essere lungo al massimo cinque pagine, con il testo a interlinea doppia tra i diversi paragrafi.

You should email this to me no later than Monday the 18^th of December, four weeks after our final class. Usually, a PDF document is best.  Please email it to:  Douglas.BrownGG@gmx.com

I will confirm with you that I have receive it.  If you do not get an email from me, contact me so that we can work out why it got lost.

It should include:  By and large, the equivalent of about twelve short entries, one for every class - or perhaps you prefer to do it by days or take another approach - which explore what you did and learned in each of our classes, what we talked about, and by doing the exercises.  (If you missed a class, please do the exercise from that class, or something similar, with your classmates, flatmates, friends or family listed below.)  Plus, a longer entry about how the ‘Johari Window Theory’, relates to you and to these classes.  And, it should end with a long, clear summary reflection about what you have experienced and learned through these classes. Be personal, and specific, not too general. Use examples of yourself and others in the classes.  And, when you send it, please include, somewhere, a lovely, clear photograph of yourself, so that I recognise who you are.

In short, tell me the story of your experience of the Applied English course and our classes together.

And perhaps, most important of all, try to just enjoy writing this reflection for me… and you.

If you missed classes…

… you should, first of all, make up for them by doing the class exercises we did by doing presentations with family or friends:

Wear something to share a story about.

Teach a bit of your language to people who do not know it.

Describe something in your own language to people who do not know it or do charades/mimare.

Tell a story illustrated by one picture from your phone.

Tell an action story with assistants doing charades/mimare.

Perform a magic trick.

Do an interactive demonstration to teach something.

Tell someone a personal story and listen to them tell that story to others.

Do a presentation on something that inspires you.

Then you can also include more about the following:

Reflect on the presenting and writing theory that we will cover in class…how useful is it to you?

Reflect on the use of the ‘Elements in a Presentation’ diagramme and how it can assist to improve your presentations.

Reflect on the points in the 'Safe and Experimental Self' list that we looked and is in the course material.

Reflect on the use of storytelling as a TED Talk technique and explore how various speakers use it.

Find a TED talk that inspires you – why is the speaker good?  Analyse their techniques.

We talked a bit about 'fear' of public speaking.  What are your thoughts?

We looked at the writing triangle.  How useful does this seem to be for you?

We looked at the 'key points pentagram'.  How is it a useful method?

Write a reflection on ‘You and self-esteem/assertiveness’.

Reflect on the question - What ‘motivates’ you?

Answer the following questions: Who, for you, is a good example of a strong, clear ‘communicator’? And what skills and qualities do they have, or techniques do they use, that you can identify and learn from? (This can be someone that you know well, or someone who you are in contact with, or someone that is in the media that you can see and appreciate their communication skills.)  What can you learn?

You should read about and consider the Johari Window model…How does it apply to you in different circumstances? (Meeting new people or being at a party, being in new circumstances, being on a work experience, being abroad and travelling, or with family and close friends, speaking in front of people, etc…).
